The Sandwich Method: Speak Irish at Home, Even If You Can't
The one simple trick to easily raise your children with Irish (even if you don’t have Irish yourself)
I call it the Language Sandwich Method. It means nobody gets left out, nobody feels confused, and you don’t need to be fluent to start using it today.
If you’re a parent trying to keep up with your child’s Irish, or you’ve always wanted to actually speak it, you’re in the right place.
One of the biggest fears parents have about using Irish at home is this: they won’t know what I’m saying. What if nobody understands me?
Especially if your partner doesn’t have Irish. Or if your child is only getting started. It can feel a bit strange, talking in a language nobody else in the room speaks. Like you’re leaving people out.
I get it. I really do. Because that was my house.
My husband isn’t Irish. English is our main language at home. But I was determined to raise our daughter with Irish, and I needed a way to do it that didn’t make anyone feel uncomfortable or excluded.
So I came up with something. I call it the Sandwich Method.
Here’s how it works
Three steps. That’s the whole thing.
- Step One Say it in Irish
- Step Two Say it in English
- Step Three Say it in Irish again
That’s it. That’s the whole method.
So instead of just saying Cuir ort do chóta (put on your coat) and hoping for the best, you’d say:
Cuir ort do chóta, put on your coat, cuir ort do chóta.
Your child hears the Irish. They understand it immediately because of the English in the middle. And then they hear the Irish again.
Over time, the English drops away naturally, because they already know what it means.

The Sandwich Method is a comfort tool.
It’s designed to make you feel more at ease bringing Irish into your home, and in my experience, the kids pick it up quickly too.
But it’s not the only way, and total immersion is obviously the gold standard for language learning.
This isn’t about replacing that.
It’s for the real-life scenario where you’re introducing a possibly new language into a home that already runs on English, and you want to actually do it, not just think about doing it.
The Sandwich Method gets you started. Comfortably. Ar aghaidh linn (on we go)!
And here’s the part most people don’t expect
Your partner hears it too. They’re learning without even trying. And nobody feels left out or confused.
That’s exactly how my husband ended up using Irish phrases around the house. He heard them so many times in context that they just stuck. He wasn’t studying. He wasn’t trying to learn. He just absorbed it, because the Sandwich Method made it easy for everyone in the room.
I still remember the first time he said “Bí cúramach” (be careful) to our daughter, and it put a smile on my face. I don’t even know if he knew he was speaking Irish.
You don’t need to be brave about this
You don’t need to go all-in from day one. You don’t need to have fluent Irish yourself. You don’t need your partner to be on board with a full immersion plan.
The Sandwich Method means you can introduce Irish gently, clearly, and without any fear that your child or partner won’t understand.
It works because it removes the pressure. No blank stare. No awkward silence. No one feeling left behind. Just a phrase, tucked into the rhythm of your normal day, with a safety net built right in.
Try it today
Pick one phrase. Just one. Something you already say ten times a day anyway, like “come here” or “sit down” or “good girl.”
Say it in Irish. Say it in English. Say it in Irish again.
You’ll be surprised how natural it feels. And how quickly it becomes just… the way you say things.

Because even if you’re not fluent and didn’t grow up in the Gaeltacht (don’t talk to me about the Irish we left school with), it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a chance to speak your language and raise your child hearing it.
