Beginner Irish Lesson 1: An Easy Word to Learn as Gaeilge
If you're starting Irish from scratch, or starting again after school, this is lesson one. One word, one small rule, and by the end you'll have said a real Irish sentence out loud. No verb tables, no essays. Just something you can use tonight.

The word: baile
Baile means town, and it also means home. You've seen it a hundred times on road signs without knowing it. Baile Átha Cliath is Dublin, literally the town of the hurdle ford. Any place name starting with Bally is baile: Ballymun, Ballina, Ballybunion.
Say it: boll-ya. Two beats, stress on the first.
The rule: sa
Sa means in the. When you put sa in front of a word starting with b, c, d, f, g, m, p, s or t, that word gets a h after its first letter. The h is called a séimhiú (shay-voo), and it softens the sound. This is the single most common thing that happens to words in Irish, and nobody at school ever explained it. Once you can see it, written Irish stops looking so strange.
So baile becomes bhaile, and bh sounds like a v.

Use it today
Sa bhaile is in the town, but in everyday Irish it's also how you say at home. That's the version you'll use most, so start there.
Tá mé sa bhaile. (taw may sah voll-ya) I'm at home.
Tá sé sa bhaile. (taw shay sah voll-ya) He's at home.
Tá sí sa bhaile. (taw shee sah voll-ya) She's at home.
Tá mé sa bhaile anois. (taw may sah voll-ya a-nish) I'm at home now.
An bhfuil tú sa bhaile? (on will too sah voll-ya) Are you at home?
Say one of them when you walk in the door this evening. Out loud, even if it's only to the dog. Irish sticks when you use it, not when you read it.
