School Irish failed me too. I left with next to nothing I could actually use. At 18 I moved to the Gaeltacht, started again, and became fluent by living in the language in a real way.
I get mistaken all the time for being a native speaker, but that's because I learnt all my Irish from native speakers: the everyday Irish that makes it a real language, not a school subject. Standard Irish, with every phrase linked to native speakers in the other dialects too, plus a cheat sheet on dialect differences and pronunciation. The basic phrases and structures stay the same no matter the dialect, so whatever one you're interested in, you're covered.
How much time does it take?
Lessons take about 10 minutes, so a few minutes here and there adds up to real progress. And with lifetime access, there's never a rush.
