I’m a fluent Irish speaker, an Irish teacher, and a mum raising my daughter through Irish.
I went from school Irish, the kind that gets you through an exam and not much else, to fluent as an adult by moving to the Gaeltacht at 18.
So I know exactly what it’s like to sit on the other side of this, and I know anyone can do it.
Gaelscoil Online is where I teach the Irish nobody taught us: the practical, everyday kind you’ll actually say out loud.
Mo Scéal
I grew up in Wicklow and was always drawn to Irish, but I left school like most of us do, with verb tables, a few poems and nothing I could use.
The day after my Leaving Cert I headed to the Aran Islands for the summer. That’s where my Irish actually started. Living and working there, I learned it the way you learn any language: by needing it, every day, for real things. From there I went on to a degree and a master’s in Irish and a teaching qualification, all through Irish.
But I didn’t become fluent from the books. I became fluent from living in the language day-to-day.Â
When my daughter was born it felt natural to raise her with Irish. So many Irish parents living abroad said that they would love to be able to do the same, so I created the very first course on speaking Irish at home to your kids.Â
Since then, I've added an Irish for Beginners course, and lots more resources to be able to help parents with Irish homework too.Â
